Gringoire is entering Milliways from about two years after the end of his canon, Notre Dame de Paris, which left him--in one of the highly improbable and often near-fatal coincidences that make up his life-- as one of the few survivors of a spectacularly bloody event that took the lives of all his close human connections.

His closest and currently only companion and is the goat Djali. Djali is a perfectly ordinary little goat, though Gringoire would argue she's far superior. She's clever, well-trained, and acts as his sometimes-busking partner. What urge towards courage and self sacrifice he has generally involves her well being.

Pierre Gringoire is a cheerful, easygoing sort, whose great goals in life are a full meal, a bed, and--if he dares to really dream-- a quiet indoor job with no heavy lifting and lots of books.

He rarely achieves any of these, but it's good to have goals!

Gringoire's been an orphan since he was six,his parents having died in the many wars going across France in the 15th century. He's largely blasé about this fact, and about much else; his general approach to life is a kind of cheerful fatalism, and he doesn't dwell much on sorrow or irritation unless it's an immediate problem that needs answering. Since his life is a series of improbable and often near-fatal coincidence, this still leaves him with plenty to occupy himself.

He has no urge to cruelty, though he's occasionally gone along with violent action or plans to keep himself safe. He has no urge to heroics, but he's been known to stick his neck out a bit for people or animals who interest him.

He likes to think of himself as well educated; for his era, he's not even wrong, thanks to a particularly odd set of coincidences, But that era is the late fifteenth century, his education was by an alchemist, and he's generally got a whole lot of cultural and scientific ideas that just aren't true--unless someone happens to be from a world where 15th century ideas of alchemy are correct. In that case, here's a trained expert!

Physically, Gringoire is very tall, very skinny, and generally dresses like a homeless vagrant in the 15th century, because that's what he is.

Pierre Gringoire (and Djali) is from Notre Dame de Paris, and is the property of Victor Hugo where he's not public domain. They appear here solely for the purpose of role-playing in [community profile] milliways_bar, from which no profit whatsoever is being made. Icon is (currently) from an illustration by Boulanger, very out of copyright, and being used for fun and no profit.
